Surnames: GILLESPY, GREGORY, WARDLAW
In Dec.1876, Ann Jane GREGORY wrote:
"I have thought it my duty to give my brother, Robert Alexander GREGORY, the genealogy of my great-grandfather, Edward GILLESPY, who owned considerable freehold property at Neenlocher (spelling?), County Donegal, Parish of Donoughmore, North of Ireland, say from the mountain to the river Finn. He was married and had 3 daughters: at his death left his estate to his 3 daughters. One married Doctor Blair, the third, Mr. Edward GREGORY, a gentleman of Scotch descent, who settled with his wife, Miss Ann GILLESPIE, on her part of the estate. His Children were Thomas GREGORY, Mary GREGORY, George GREGORY and Edward GREGORY (my father) who are all no more. My father studied law and held courts at four different places, say Castlefin, County Donegal, Parish of Donoughmore, also at Stranorlar near Bailbofey, where gentlemen of rank attended, such as the Honorable Chas. Stiles, Sir Edmond Hayes, Capt. Cochrane and also Mr. Dunlop of Munellon. My father, Edward GREGORY, held the position of Magistrate for 21 years, and after his death in 1825, his second cousin, Mr. Hamilton GILLESPIE of Munellan, near Killygordon, got his situation as magistrate; he was considered competent to fill same, that is now 51 years ago. My father was married to Miss Mary WARDLAW, Daughter of Mr. James WARDLAW of Castlefin, County Donegal and departed this life in the 83rd year of her age; was married by the Rev. Robert Spense, in the year 1805 at the Donoughmore Church of England. Names of the children left at the death of my father: Ann Jane GREGORY, Elizabeth GREGORY, Edward GREGORY, James GREGORY, Andrew
Ferguson GREGORY, Rebecca GREGORY, Wm. Chambers GREGORY, Robert Alexander GREGORY, John Lighton GREGORY.
I am now in my 71st year and the above is all correct."
