THE LEGACY THAT IS LAGHY COMMUNITY AND CHURCH
We decided earlier in the year that something special was needed to mark the Millennium and I suggested we write a book on the history of the parish. It is now completed and ready for publication. We hope to have it from the 6th of December. It has 160+ pages of information and photographs. There are articles on all aspects of parish life, all the organisations---GFS, CLB, the Bowling Club, Badminton Club, Mothers Union--with photographs. The church and its history, up to the present day, the Sunday School, past and present, the first Christmas party, the Barn, the Excursion. Soirees, concerts, socials and the dances are all described. There are articles on the schools, with school photographs. The 1901 census, all the families living in the parish in 2000 and an outline history on every family living in the parish at the present time. There are birth, marriage and death records dating from 1691 to 1836. Names of all families living in the village and townlands in the 1600 and 1700 hundreds. There are reminisces by people from the parish on their schooldays and articles on life in the past. There is a history of the village and townlands, the quarry and the railroad. It should be of great interest to anyone from the parish or the area as well as a valuable historical reference. The books cost $15 American dollars [Inc p&p] £8.50 sterling [Inc p&p] and all proceeds go to the Church Restoration Fund. Killymard, Ancient and Modern
Where to start with a description of this book? The first thing that comes to mind is the fact that this book contains 19th century census abstracts, and as everyone who has struggled with Irish research knows, virtually all census documents were destroyed either intentionally or accidentally in the early 1900s. Well, they do exist for Killymard Parish, thanks to The Rev William Wilson Mercer, who recorded these details in notebooks, recently found in the house of Charles Gould. They are the census for 1821/41/51 and are the only copies, the originals being destroyed by fire in the Public Record Office in Dublin in 1922. This well written and presented book contains a wealth of other information including family histories, hearth money rolls, births/baptisms from 1844-1880, memoirs, local history, maps and photographs. If your ancestors originated in Killymard (and now I wish mine had!) then this book is invaluable.
