The Abbey
It is widely believed that the site of the old abbey of Aughanunshin dates back to the 13th or 14th Century, when the Franciscans arrived in the Letterkenny area.
The Franciscan monks are thought to have remained in the monastery until c. 1610 when they were evicted.
The earliest readable headstone in the surrounding graveyard dates from 1756 and the latest, 2003.
When the area was surveyed in 1834, the Abbey was noted to be in ruins.
